Factors Influencing Direct Part Marking Methods

The Department of Defense has allowed two types UID marking with the items- direct part paying attention to and application of UID brands. Direct part marking involves marking that with a globally unique identification relating to the item itself. It is a process of marking a component with barcode symbols allowing tracking of the part or item because of their full life cycle. When it comes to permanent marking of the items, the DoD specifies that UID marking of that should be permanent for any functional life time in the item which may differ from several months to several years.

Basically, industries such since aerospace, automotive and electronic brands prefer DPM for reliable identification in the parts and items. As being the DoD requires physical mark of UID in the tangible assets, the DPM (immediate part marking) assures safety and warranty along with satisfying the regulatory requirements. The 2D data matrix code is the most accepted bar code type for the barcode symbols that are used for the DPM in the items. However, some companies prefer QR Code consistent with their requirement. The UID marking process enables management and tracking in the items ranging in their own value and sizes.

The various marking methods of immediate part marking are Coarse blasting, adhesive dispensing, Thrown, forge or mold, Department of transportation peen, Electro-chemical etching, Adornments, Engraving/milling, Laser marking, LaserShot peeing, Lique sheet metal jet, Stencil. There are other marking methods which include embossing, vibro-etch and handbook metal stamp, but they can be not for applying product readable micro-size symbols.

That this Direct Part Marking Methods are Selected for the Items

There are number of different factors basing which it is decided whether DPM would work for the particular item.

Function in the Parts

For the parts that are used for safety critical applications such as high stress system, and aircraft engine, the non-intrusive marking methods are utilized.

Geometry in the Part or the Item

The DPM is difficult if the shape of the product or the part is not really convenient for the marking. It is difficult to etch the details matrix code on a curved surface.

Surface type

The DPM is difficult when the texture of the part surface is highly polished. The marking requires reducing the glare in the surface before marking.

Size of the Part

Though size of the parts is not a very important factor for using 2d data matrix code, the sizes of that texts are adjusted using the available space.

Life span of the Items together with their Operating Environment

While selecting the tactic of direct part marking, it is essential to consider the functional life span with the items and the environment that the items are used. It is necessary that the marking ought to be permanent.

Thickness with the Surface

It is crucial to consider the thickness in the surface as there are risks of deformation of the part in the event the intrusive marking methods are used. The marking depth in most of the methods should not exceed 1/10 in the thickness of the element.
